Liberals present their arguments at Constitutional Court

The Constitutional Court examined the application filed by Liberal MPs Victor Popa and Valeriu Munteanu, who asked the court to interpret the provisions concerning the status of lawmaker. The Liberals said the MPs are obliged to attend the sittings of Parliament, while the Communist lawmakers have missed them since February, Info-Prim Neo reports. Victor Popa stated that their application is based on the parliamentary boycott of the PCRM, but the objective is not a political one. They want to make the MPs who do not fulfill their duties to be disciplined as the lawmakers were elected by the people and should represent their interests in Parliament. The Parliament’s representative Sergiu Chirica said that the Law on the Status of MP and the legislature’s regulations oblige the lawmakers to take part in the meetings of the legislative body and the standing commissions. The unjustified nonattendance is a violation of the legislation. The Parliament’s secretariat should be informed about every boycotted sitting. Otherwise, the absence is unjustified. Sergiu Chirica also said that traveling to districts and villages and holding meetings with the voters are rights, while the attendance of the sittings of the legislature and the standing commissions is an obligation. Minister of Justice and the Government’s representative Oleg Efrim said the legislation does not provide answers to all the questions. For example, an MP cannot be deprived of seat for missing the plenary sittings without reason. The Law on the Status of MP says the lawmakers can boycott a sitting in protest at one or several items of the agenda. The Constitutional Court will make public its decision over this application on June 19.
