Liberals call on EU to take control over possible early elections

The Liberal Party (PL) says the European Union (EU) should take control over the organization of the possible early elections. PL leader Mihai Ghimpu told a news conference on May 26 that the EU could provide this control, including by allocating money, insuring impartial public broadcasting and correctly compiling the voters lists, Info-Prim Neo reports. Ghimpu says the EU could allocate money for the early parliamentary elections, since it had also allocated, indirectly, money for the April 5 poll, through projects meant to enhance the transparency in the elections, about 3 million euros. The EU should offer Moldova money also because, up top now, the Communist authorities have paid no heed to the European bodies' recommendations concerning the electoral process, stated the PL president. He says he will send these proposals to the EU. The Liberal leader says the economic argument used by the Communists (PCRM), that the early parliamentary elections would be too expensive especially in crisis conditions is not justified, since 20 times more money will be spent to repair the two buildings damaged on April 7. Ghimpu has reiterated that no PL parliamentarian will attend the May 28 presidential vote. The talks with the ruling party (PCRM) are possible only after the second attempt to elect a president, “in order to hold free and fair early elections.” The PL also states it will organize any government on condition it is elected legally, by democratic and transparent vote. In another context, Ghimpu has ruled out a possible defeat of the Liberals in the early vote. “The ones having voted on April 5 have not changed their voting option,” he stated. Mihai Ghimpu says those three opposition parties from the parliament will have an efficient checking mechanism in the early elections: the opposition will have by three representatives in any election commission. On May 28 the Parliament will try to elect a president for the last time. The MPs will choose between Zinaida Greceanai and Andrei Neguta, both advanced by the PCRM. The Communists lack a single vote to elect the President, and the opposition says it won't attend the vote. If the Parliament fails to elect a president, it will be dissolved and early elections will be called.
