Liberals ask for voters' money
The Liberal Party (PL) has financial problems, its president Mihai Ghimpu complained at a news conference on June 19. He has called on voters to back the PL with money in the electoral campaign. Other two leaders of the opposition parties from the parliament, the PLDM and the AMN, say they will manage it alone, despite the crisis.
“At this stage of the fight for democracy and the state of law in Moldova, the PL calls on citizens to financially back our common effort. The citizens' contribution will help to better organize the electoral campaign for the early parliamentary elections on July 29, drawing nearer the fall of the Communists and the installation of democracy,” Mihai Ghimpu has stated.
The PL leader says he decided to make the call after the party had been helped by several supporters. “Several persons granted assistance to us and we think it's possible to have a good electoral campaign so as to dismantle the Communist rule,” Ghimpu said. He says he has received 2,000 euros and 10,000 lei. “The PL accepts not only money but also potatoes,” the politician said smiling.
When asked by Info-Prim Neo, the leader of Our Moldova Alliance (AMN), Serafim Urecheanu, has said the AMN will find the money to participate in the poll later in July, despite the crisis.
“At a time when society copes with an economic crisis the Communists have brought us to it's hard for the elections, too. We have financial problems, but I think we'll find a minimum of finances to run in the race. The AMN will not ask for the citizens' help,” Urecheanu says.
PLDM leader Vlad Filat assures his party is ready for the race. “I want to reiterate the idea I launch when setting up the Liberal Democratic Party: apart from ideas and discernment in managing a political process, we have all the leverage, technical and financial, to make achieving results possible,” Filat told a news conference on Friday.
