Liberal-Reformists suggest involving WTO in settling Russian ban problem

The Liberal-Reformist Party (PLR) says it's important to continue negotiations with Russia to find a reasonable solution concerning the restrictions imposed on some groups of Moldovan exports. Should the negotiations fail, however, the party suggests initiating consultation proceedings with the World Trade Organization (WTO).

According to a press statement from PLR, Deputy Agriculture Minister Sergiu Ghetiu, who was appointed to office on PLR's nomination, said that Russia is seeking to re-direct its trade towards markets that have “sanitary deficiencies bigger than Moldova's”.In particular, the deputy minister cited Turkish and Greek fruits as having a higher incidence of objects that are subject to quarantine than is the case of the Moldovan fruits. “We may consider this an act of discrimination against out country and ask the WTO to intervene”.

PLR says it trusts the Government's competence and professionalism “in initiating (a response), in presenting adequate arguments and recovering the damages caused by the arbitrary restrictions imposed by the Russian authorities under the disguise of sanitary and phito-sanitary protection measures”.
