Liberal Party leaves government coalition

The Liberal Party decided to abandon the government coalition formed in Parliament. The announcement was made by the party’s leader Mihai Ghimpu after the May 26 meeting of the National Council of the PL, IPN reports.

The council was convoked following the arrest of the Liberal Party’s deputy chairman Dorin Chirtoaca, Mayor General of Chisinau municipality, on influence peddling charges on May 25.

According to Mihai Ghimpu, the participation by the PL in the ruling alliance cost the party a lot. This affected its image and made it lose many heavyweights.

“They pretend to be fighting corruption, but actually fight with the Liberal Party. They hit us harshly in the recent past. We chose to take part in government so that the Russians do not win. But now they want to govern further together with the same Russians,” stated Mihai Ghimpu.
