Liberal lawmakers propose legislative measure against junk food for children

Liberal MPs Valeriu Munteanu and Vadim Cojocaru have registered a legislative proposal introducing the notion of “food products unrecommended for children of preschool and school age”and regulating the sale of such foods inside and near schools, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Regretfully, much of the food offered for sale today in educational institutions (in particular fast food) are rather far from the notion of healthy food, which often impacts negatively on the growth and development of children, who due to their age, do not realize the harm of it and are, in most cases, lured by colorful packaging”, the lawmakers argued in an explanatory note to the proposal. The proposal defines unrecommended food for children as “food products that contain high amounts of substances which represent health hazards, such as fats, salt, sugar, sugar substitutes, food additives, to the detriment of healthy compounds like fibers, vitamins and minerals”. Under the proposal, preparing and selling junk food in educational establishments and within a 100 m range of them would entail fines of up to 20 conventional units for individuals and of up to 150 conventional units, plus a potential loss of license, for companies. The authors suggest that the list of junk foods should be compiled by the Ministry of Health.
