Pressure is being exerted on the Liberal-Democratic councilors and mayors by those who formed the parliamentary coalition. After a meeting of local elected officials of the Liberal Democratic Party (PLDM) on February 6, representatives of the party said they are threatened that they will not receive money for salaries and other social benefits if they do not leave the party or do not sign statements to condemn the decision of the PLDM’s administration to act in opposition to the government, IPN reports.
The party’s acting chairman Valeriu Strelet said that the meeting with district councilors and mayors was convened because these are the most representative category that is permanently in contact with the people. They wanted to see the opinion of the mayors and councilors about the current Cabinet and about the party’s future given that the preparations for the Congress are underway.
“We also assessed the possibilities of the mayor’s offices headed by Lib-Dems being obstructed, especially in the distribution of public money. We adopted a statement by which we confirmed the unity and solidarity of the party’s members, especially because the local elected officials remain the target of attacks and corruption attempts and attempts to make them leave the party. But most of our mayors will not leave the party,” stated Valeriu Strelet.
The PLDM’s deputy chairman Vadim Pistrinciuc said the Lib-Dems are profoundly indignant at the fact that those who formed the parliamentary coalition threaten the local public authorities that they will get no money, including for salaries, if they do not sign all kinds of statements to inform about their defection from the party or to condemn its actions. “We call on them to stop such actions as we will riposte. We will picket public institutions and will transmit messages to the foreign partners,” he stated.
The PLDM decided to withdraw to the opposition after a parliamentary coalition was formed and this proposed Democrat Pavel Filip for the premiership. Eight Liberal-Democratic MPs voted for the new Government.
