Liberal-Democratic councilors against transforming Varlaam St into pedestrian area

The Liberal-Democratic faction on the Chisinau Municipal Council (CMC) does not agree with making Mitropolit Varlaam St a pedestrian area, as it was announced on Monday, Info-Prim Neo reports. In the CMC’s meeting on February 21, Liberal-Democratic councilor Victor Bodiu said the mayor should review his proposal to transform this street into a pedestrian area as it does not meet the conditions of such an area. He added that the infrastructure should be rehabilitated first and, in order to avoid dissatisfaction and traffic jams, the transport should be redirected according to a very clear scheme. For his part, Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said he earlier proposed that this street should be rehabilitated, but his proposal was rejected. He explained that the street will become a pedestrian area for a trial period, only on Saturdays and Sundays. The mayor stressed he was ready to discuss the issue. In the February 20 meeting of Chisinau City Hall officials, Dorin Chirtoaca announced that from March 1 the streets Veronica Micle and Mitropolit Varlaam will become pedestrian areas on Saturdays and Sundays.
