The Liberal Democratic Party from Moldova (PLDM) will organize meetings with citizens on May 11 to support speeding up signing the Convention on small traffic across the border with Romania. Such meetings are planned in 13 Moldovan districts. The announcement was made at a news conference on Wednesday, April 30, by the PLDM president, Vlad Filat, Info-Prim Neo reports. The moves are aimed at making aware the public opinion, Vlad Filat said. The meetings will end by adopting resolutions in which the participants will demand speeding up signing of the Convention. Those resolution will be handed to the Government. On May 25 the party plans to organize a wide people’s manifestation in this regard. “The PLDM calls on the democratic and pro-European political parties to join its actions in order to make possible the soonest signature of the convention, absolutely necessary for a more than a million citizens of Moldova,” Vlad Filat said. PLDM first deputy president, Alexandru Tanase, has remarked that signing the convention on the small frontier traffic is the optimal solution to allow the inhabitants living near the border to keep on the relationships with their relatives over the Prut, as those relationships became difficult after Romania introduced the visa regime. The refusal of the ruling coalition to sign the convention is “an anti-people actions, isolating your own people to keep it under control,” Tanase said. According to the PLDM deputy resident, Iulian Fruntasu, the fact that Moldovan Government conditions signing the convention on signing the basic treaty is profoundly anti-popular. A responsible Government should have started negotiations under these circumstances, in order to get as many as possible benefits for citizens, Fruntasu has said. The draft Convention on the small border traffic was forwarded by the Romanian Government to the Moldovan Government on March 25. The draft provides that the Moldovan citizens living on an area of 30 km from the border with Romania will be able to the neighboring country without visas, on the basis of a special permit valid up to five years. On April 17, the Moldovan Ministry for Foreign Affairs and European Integration issued a communiqué explaining the connection between the Treaty on the state frontier between Moldova and Romania and the Convention on the small border traffic.
