Lib-Dem MP proposes allocations for expanding wooded areas

Liberal-Democrat MP Iurie Apostolachi has submitted a bill proposing to allocate 30 percent of the National Ecologic Fund to financing efforts of expanding forested areas, Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, Iurie Apostolachi noted that only 15 percent of Moldova's territory is covered with forests. According to him, planting more forests would help to resolve both environmental and social problems. The MP gave the example of a village that planted a community forest which the village hall is using to provide vulnerable people with firewood. “There is a lot of uncared-for land. Why not use this land to plant community forests? Today domestic firewood products account for only 4% of the fuel burned for energy in our country, with the remaining 96% belonging to imported fuels. Why not raise this percentage by expanding wooded areas?”. 30 percent of the Ecologic Fund would translate to roughly 60 million lei. The intention is to use this money to eventually achieve a level of 30 percent of Moldova to be occupied by forested areas.
