Legislature of Gagauzia intends to ban terms Romanian language, literature, history

The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia will consider banning the terms Romanian language, Romanian literature, and Romanian history in its September 13 meeting. According to a communiqué from the local legislature, if the decision is taken, the ban on the use of these terms will be imposed in all the public and state institutions and education institutions of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia, IPN reports.

Following the examination of this issue in the meeting of the presidium of the People’s Assembly, deputy Ivan Burgudji said that in accordance with Moldova’s Constitution, the official language in the country is Moldovan, based on the Latin script. Consequently, the use of the term Romanian language is unconstitutional. Other members of the presidium shared the deputy’s opinion.
