Legal Commission rejects referendum proposed by Communists

The Parliament's Legal Commission rejected with a 7 to 5 vote the Communist Party's proposal to hold a national consultative referendum on Moldova's accession to the founding treaties of the Russia-Belarus-Kazakhstan Customs Union. On the same day the proposal received the disapproval of the Security Commission, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Communists initially proposed the referendum to be held on November 18. MP Sergiu Sirbu told the Commission that the date could be moved up to allow a 60 days long required ahead of any referendum. When asked by members of the European Integration Alliance whether the Communists analyzed the risks of this accession, Sergiu Sirbu said that Parliament should first see what the nation thought of the idea of joining the Customs Union and then analyze risks and benefits. The Communists also submitted a motion to dismiss Speaker Marian Lupu. Sergiu Sirbu stated that Lupu “has no moral right to hold this post” after rejecting the Communists' formal request to convoke an extraordinary parliamentary session and set a date for the referendum. This motion was, too, rejected by the Commission with a 7 to 5 vote.
