After over three hours of discussions, the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities approved the draft Law on Guaranteeing of Equality. The bill will be debated in the May 25 sitting of Parliament. Contacted by Info-Prim Neo, the commission’s head, Liberal MP Victor Popa said the bill was submitted to Parliament for examination in the first reading with a series of amendments. The chairman of the Liberal-Democratic parliamentary group Valeriu Strelet said such a law was adopted in EU member states six years ago. In Romania it happened recently and nothing bad occurred there after its adoption, as the opponents of the law in Moldova anticipated. “The bill does not refer to the foundations of family, religious beliefs, education, and adoption. It is needed for avoiding discrimination against much larger groups than the sexual minorities, such as the invalids and national minorities. That’s why we will vote it without reserve,” stated Valeriu Strelet. The president of honor of the Democratic Party Dumitru Diacov said the Democratic lawmakers will vote for the bill without the slightest hesitation. The May 24 sitting of the legislature was interrupted as the Alliance for European Integration called a closed-door meeting after which it announced that the parliamentary commissions will be convened. The agenda items that hadn’t been examined were transferred for the next sittings. The legal commission Thursday also accepted the draft Law on the Reformation of the Anticorruption Center.
