Layer of snow in northern Moldova reaches 15 cm

There are winter conditions on the national and link roads. Several communities remained without electricity owing to the hoarfrost that formed on the cables. It rained with hail last night. In northern Moldova, it has been snowing and the layer of snow reached 15 centimeters. The information was presented in a meeting of the Commission for Emergencies that was convoked by Prime Minister Pavel Filip on March 18, IPN reports.

Head of the General Inspectorate for Emergencies Mihai Harabagiu said that according to the data available at 7am, all the national roads were passable, but movement on sloping streets was difficult. Ten communities remained disconnected from the power supply, but half of these were reconnected meanwhile. No calls from the emergency medical services were made to the Inspectorate.

Gennady Rosca, of the State Hydrometeorological Service, said it is expected to snow heavily on March 18. During the next few days, it will snow in smaller amounts. The northwestern wind is forecast to intensify to 15-20 m/s. Until March 22, the temperatures at night will oscillate between -5 and -10 degrees Celsius.

Minister of Economy and Infrastructure Kiril Gaburici said the drivers can follow the situation on the national roads. “The State Road Administration placed 40 surveillance cameras that enable to see the situation on roads. Their location and images updated every half an hour are available on the Administration’s website,” he stated.

Pavel Filip requested to permanently keep in touch with the local public authorities. He instructed the General Inspectorate for Emergencies to continuously inform the people about the situation in the country. There is no crisis, but the situation is dangerous owing to the hoarfrost and sleet.

The Premier noted that the power suppliers do not intervene in an orderly way in emergencies. The National Agency for Energy Regulation should come up with solutions. If the suppliers do not have enough incident response teams, they should have contracts with other companies that would assist them in emergencies and this thing should be regulated.

The State Hydrometeorological Service issued a yellow code advisory for a sudden change in weather for the period between March 17 and 22. The passing Mediterranean cyclones will cause difficult meteorological conditions. It will rain on March 18, but on March 19 there will be sleet and snow and the precipitation will total 10-15 l/m2 in 12 hours. There will be snowstorms in parts.
