Lawyers will seek adjournment of proceedings in case of Ilan Shor

The lawyers for Shor Party MP Ilan Shor will request the court to adjourn the proceedings. The politician hired a lawyer from the UK, Shaul David Brazil, of the firm of lawyers BCL Solicitors LLP. The British lawyer noted that given the scale and complexity of this case, they will be applying to the court for a short adjournment of the proceeding to give them time to review the case file and prepare submissions on Mister Shor’s behalf.

In a news conference hosted by IPN, Shaul David Brazil said they have been instructed by Ilan Shor to advise and represent him in his legal proceedings in Moldova, including specifically in his defense to the allegations contained in the indictment and to ensure that his human rights are respected and protected. “Our role will be to identify, prevent and take steps to challenge violations of Mister Shor’s rights under the European Convention of Human Rights and other international treaties to which Moldova is a party,” stated the British lawyer.

“That instruction requires us to undertake a comprehensive review of the case file, which amounts to numerous volumes of material and that work is ongoing. Nonetheless, as we remained at a relatively early stage of reviewing the material, we have been informed by Mister Shor’s Moldovan representatives that numerous violations of his fundamental rights have already occurred, which would not be committed in England or around the European jurisdictions,” said Shaul David Brazil.

Lawyer Aureliu Colenco voiced hope that things will change. “We yet consider there will be a fair and legal trial, which we have expected for years. We want justice in the Republic of Moldova, not only in the case of Ilan Shor, to be objective, legal from all angles. Regrettably, the accused is persecuted and the lawyers are also persecuted as they are associated with client Ilan Shor,” noted the lawyer.

According to him, justice in the Republic of Moldova has been captured. “This is proven by statements of judges who work in the Republic of Moldova. This fact is also known by the general public – dubious deeds and names in the justice system, procedural violations committed by courts of law when examining the case of Ilan Shor,” stated the lawyer.

Aureliu Colenco said the lawyers are put in disadvantageous situations against the prosecutors. The fundamental rights of the lawyers and the accused are violated. “The legal requests of the lawyers concerning the administration of evidence are ignored. The state interferes in the work of lawyers, persecutes the lawyers for Ilan Shor and this is a very big reason existing today. I refer to lawyers Colenco Aureliu and Balan Iulian who, by different methods, are included in lists and are illegally associated with their client. This way the state makes the lawyers to consider interrupting the contract relations with their client Ilan Shor. We consider the association with client Ilan Shor is illegal and the inclusion in particular Magnitsky lists or the abusive list of the Commission for Exceptional Situations represent interference and persecution of lawyers,” stated Aureliu Colenco.
