Lawyers Union demands to strop interference in work of lawyers

The Lawyers Union calls on international organizations, justice sector managers and civil society to contribute to the definitive elimination of the behavioral deviations of state functionaries in relation to lawyers, specifying that an unprecedented situation was created, when criminal cases are started against lawyers over false statements.

In a news conference at IPN, the Union’s president Nina Lozan said the Union will protest against any manifestation of breach of law and marginalization of lawyers. In this connection, the Lawyers Union formulated a series of demands aimed at protecting the lawyers in their job.

The demands include to stop prosecuting lawyers Veaceslav Turcan and Maxim Belinski and for Parliament to interpret Article 352 of the Penal Code as this norm is misinterpreted.

The Ministry of Justice is requested to immediately draft a bill to amend the penal and contravention legislation by which the work of lawyers would be protected from any interference, while the state functionaries who interfere would be held accountable.

Nina Lozan said that depending on the content of answers that they will receive and on the actions of the decision-making bodies, the Lawyers Union reserves the right to convoke the Extraordinary Congress of Lawyers to decide other ways of resistance and protection for the profession.
