Lawyers for Ilan Shor ask to transfer case to another appeals court

The lawyers for Ilan Shor ask that the case featuring the former president of the Administration Board of Banca de Economii should be transferred from the Cahul Appeals Court to another appeals court. A request to this effect made to the Supreme Court of Justice.

Earlier, the lawyers for Ilan Shor also requested the Supreme Court of Justice to transfer the case, but the request was rejected. Contacted by IPN for a comment, lawyer Aureliu Kolenko said that it was decided to make a new transfer request as the defense considers the Cahul Appeals Court committed new deviations from the law.

Even so, the lawyer noted that since he took over, the examination of this case was stepped up, but the case is complex. For example, one hearing was held at the Cahul Appeals Court on September 7 and there was questioned a witness for the prosecution, but he refused to give names. Also, the prosecution and the defense formulated a number of questions. “We cannot provide details now as the requests haven’t been examined yet,” stated Aureliu Kolenko.

The next hearing at the Cahul Appeals Court was set to take place on September 14, starting at 10:30am.

The Buiucani branch of the Chisinau City Court on June 21, 2017 sentenced Ilan Shor to seven years and a half in jail for causing considerable damage to the state by swindle and abuse of trust. The same day, Ilan Shor was released from house arrest and will be under judicial control until a definitive sentence is given to him.

The sentence of the first court was appealed by the prosecution and the defense and by the representative of SA Banca de Economii. The case reached the Chisinau Appeals Court in only six months and in February 2018 was transferred to the Cahul Appeals Court.

In June 2019, immediately after the PDM conceded power, Ilan Shor disappeared from the public sphere. A criminal case over illegal leaving of the country was started against him. On August 15, 2019, Ilan Shor was deprived of parliamentary immunity.

Answering journalists’ questions several days ago, Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo in a news conference said the PGO asked Israel to extradite Ilan Shor, but the Israeli authorities do not extradite the own citizens.
