Lawyers: Filat’s state of health is worsening

Vlad Filat’s lawyers said the state of health of the ex-Liberal-Democratic Premier, who is held on remand, is worsening visibly. In a press release issued by the defense, it is said that this happens because their client is recurrently transferred from one cell to another and because of the inhuman and degrading conditions in which Vlad Filat is held, IPN reports.

“On November 24, 2015, Mister Vlad Filat was moved to another cell, in the basement. The Penitentiary’s administration explained that the transfer followed a short circuit. It should be noted that this is the third time that Vlad Filat was transferred and every time the transfer is made in at least suspicious conditions,” says the press release.

The lawyers said that they repeatedly asked the prosecutor who monitors the observance of prisoners’ rights to ascertain the inhuman and degrading conditions in which Vlad Filat is held. As a result of the meetings with the Penitentiary’s administration, the November 30 deadline was set for fixing the problem and transferring the ex-Premier to the previous cell.

The defense describes the steps taken by the Penitentiary’s administration as serious abuses and pressure exerted on Vlad Filat. The lawyers noted that at the beginning of November they filed a complaint about the detention conditions of Filat and were issued with an answer saying that these meet the norms stimulated in the sentence serving status and there were identified no violations of the current legislation with regard to the given detainee.

The ex-Premier’s wife, journalist Angela Gonţa, on her Facebook page published a fragment from a letter received from Vlad Filat: “They do everything possible here to destroy me morally. On Tuesday they took me without reason to a cell in the basement, where the conditions are miserable.” The politician also wrote that this week he will make his wil, in case something happens to him.

The former Prime Minister was arrested in October on charges of passive corruption and influence peddling and faces up to 15 years in jail.
