Andrei Bivol, lawyer for the ex-President of Romania Traian Băsescu, said it is unacceptable to say that Traian Băsescu was stripped of the Moldovan nationality for legal reasons. According to him, this was done for exclusively political reasons. The issue was developed in the talk show “People’s Council” on 10TV channel, IPN reports.
“It was proven that the nationality was withdrawn for exclusively political reasons and this attempt to give a juridical assessment or a law violation motivation is absurd,” stated Andrei Bivol. The lawyer noted that if Traian Băsescu decides, they will go to the European Court of Human Rights with this case.
Vlad Biletski, president of the Unionist Association Unirea-ODIP, said President Igor Dodon struggles with Traian Băsescu and uses the presidential institution like a truncheon. “We realize this is a political case that regrettably is to be dealt with by the legal system and it is very hard to try a case that is actually political in character,” he stated, noting Igor Dodon’s public assertions about Traian Băsescu are a proof of the fact that attempts are made to restrict the political rights of a person who is already citizen of the Republic of Moldova.
In the evening of November 7, the Supreme Court of Justice rejected the appeal of the lawyers for former President of Romania Traian Băsescu, who is the president of honor of the National Unity Party of Moldova, against the decree signed by the President of Moldova Igor Dodon, by which Traian Băsescu was deprived of Moldovan nationality.
