A hearing at the Cahul Appeals Court in the case of the ex-manager of the Administration Board of Banca de Economii Ilan Shor was held on December 10, between 4pom and 9pm. According to the lawyers, the way in which the hearings are conducted is humiliating for the participants in the trial, both prosecutors and lawyers. The defense expects that the same ‘anarchy’ will be witnessed at the next hearing set for December 17.
Contacted by IPN for details, lawyer Aureliu Kolenko said the court’s interest in convicting Ilan Shor, in the absence of documents and with procedural violations, is evident. “I never said that he should not be convicted. I just note that any person has rights. The lawyer has rights. The trial should be conducted in accordance with the Penal Procedure Code. They permanently violate all the procedures in our country,” stated the lawyer.
Aureliu Kolenko also said that the lawyers will go to the Supreme Court of Justice and the European Court of Human Rights. There are political and business interest groups that simply want Ilan Shor to be convicted faster, while the court fully obeys the relevant orders.
In June 2017, Ilan Shor was convicted to seven years and a half in jail for causing damage to the state by swindle and abuse of power. The sentence was appealed to a higher court. In June 2019, Ilan Shor disappeared from the public sphere. Criminal proceedings were brought against him over illegal leaving of the country. On August 15, 2019, Ilan Shor was stripped of parliamentary immunity.
