Representatives of the Citizens’ Group for the Reunification of the Country note that the law proposed at the national constitutional referendum of October 20 requires “YES” from 50%+1 of all voting-eligible citizens. A letter addressed to the country’s administration, to the president of the Constitutional Court and also to the EU ambassador and Romania’s ambassador says that such a presence is necessary on the grounds that it is a constitutional law to amend provisions regarding the sovereign character of the state.
In a news conference hosted by IPN, associate professor Andrei Groza said that the absolute majority of citizens do not know, and the authorities do not say, how many people must vote in the referendum for it to be validated and how many percent of them must say “YES” for the Constitution to be amended. Thus, if there are 3.3 million voters on the electoral registers at present, as the Central Election Commission announced, 1.65 million citizens of these should vote “in favor” in the referendum.
“The authorities, so far, have not informed the citizens about how and in what situation the constitutional law proposed in the referendum will be adopted. And here we have a reasonable suspicion that this is done intentionally because, if the citizens of the Republic of Moldova knew the truth, they will not be so gullible,” stated Andrei Groza.
The head of the National Council of Public Associations “For the Nation and the Country” Vasile Nastas said that the population does not know details about this referendum. In his opinion, it is a waste of money as another referendum of this kind will be organized before accession. “I think that many people will not go to the referendum because they will not know how to vote,” stated Vasile Nastas.
“We don’t think this way of not telling the truth is good. But the truth says something completely different. We will obviously vote in the presidential election. We will act so that the fifth column does not win. Obviously, we will vote those who are for Europe, especially those who are for reunification. But I don’t know what the outcome will be, if we take into account the practice of the presidential and parliamentary elections, in which only around 1.4 million people voted,” said associate professor Vasile Onceanu.
“In these circumstances, we request you to monitor the situation and, if necessary, to intervene, in order to put an end to the possible violation of the Constitution. We are sure that the European Union will not accept such a possible way of integrating the Republic of Moldova into the European Community of free and fair nations,” reads the letter addressed to President Maia Sandu, Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, Constitutional Court president Domnica Manole, European Union Ambassador Janis Mazeiks and Ambassador of Romania Cristian-Leon Țurcanu.
