Parliament passed the Law on the Prosecution Service in the second, final reading. All the MPs voted in favor, including those of the Liberal-Democratic group, who earlier said that some of the amendments proposed by the Democrats generated suspicions. The law will take effect on August 1, IPN reports.
Democratic MP Sergiu Sarbu said the process of finalizing the bill on the prosecution service was accompanied by misinformation and manipulation. “We declare that the amendments approved in the last meeting of the legal commission represented technical corrections that didn’t affect the conception of the bill. After the meeting, we had discussions with the authors of the bill and representatives of the working group in a move to eliminate the erroneous interpretations,” he stated.
The head of the Liberal-Democratic group Tudor Deliu said the position that the Lib-Dems maintained during the last few days concerning the amendments to the bill was taken into account. “The Liberal-Democratic group will vote the bill in the second reading on condition that the related laws are submitted to Parliament for consideration as soon as possible. The Law on the Prosecution Service aims to solve a big problem of the state, namely the depoliticization of the institution,” he said.
Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said the adoption of this bill represents only the start of the prosecution service reform. The related laws will be finalized soon so that the law takes effect this August.
Vlad Gribincea, who headed the working group that drafted the bill on the prosecution service, said that two more packages of related laws will be soon submitted to Parliament. These must be voted by June so that the law could come into force in August. The Constitution is to also be amended so that the prosecutor general could be elected according to the new norms.
Under the new law, the prosecutor general will be named for a single seven-year term. The candidate will be chosen at a contest organized by the Supreme Council of Prosecutors. The person who will obtain the highest score will be presented to the head of state for confirmation to the post.
