Law on personal data protection passed in second reading
The violation of the rules of using personal data will be fined 3 000 lei in the case of private individuals and 10 000 lei in the case of legal entities.
The given stipulation is contained in the bill on the protection of personal data that was adopted by Parliament in second reading.
The Communist MPs raised a series of objections to the penalty measures, demanding that there should be introduced criminal punishment.
The study “Protection of the personal data in the context of the dialogue on the liberalization of the visa regime and the negotiation of the future Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU”, which was carried out by an affiliate expert of the Romanian European Policy Center and presented in June, shows that Moldova faces serious problems as regards the observance of the right to respect for private life.
Study author Bogdan Manolea said then that despite the new law passed by Parliament in first reading, there are problems related to the institutional aspect and the implementation of the law. No limit is set as to the extent to which such information can be collected.
The study recommended adjusting the legislation on personal data protection, ensuring appropriate penalties for violating it and fully reassessing the necessity of collection personal data and the length of keeping them.
