Law on chemical cauterization of pedophiles returns to Parliament
The law on chemical castration of pedophiles was sent to Parliament for re-adoption. The legal commission on appointments and immunities approved it repeatedly after President Nicolae Timofti refused to promulgate it, arguing it promotes inhuman treatment, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Liberal MP Valeriu Munteanu, who drafted the bill, said the law envisions the mandatory castration of persons who raped children under 14, while older children, depending on the circumstances. President Nicolae Timofti formulated no proposals for amending the law.
Liberal lawmaker Victor Popa, who heads the legal commission, said that those who are against the law contradict themselves in a way. “They say it is inhuman to castrate the pedophiles, but assert it is an inefficient method as there is an antidote. Is it inhuman to administer an injection to a person? Is a child treated more humanly when he is raped? Shouldn’t we protect them?” asked the MP.
Lib-Dem Tudor Deliu expressed his concern, saying those who will be castrated may become aggressive when set free and may kill people.
The law on chemical castration of pedophiles is to be passed by Parliament on May 24 or 25. The Liberals said that it will be adopted together with the draft Law on Ensuring of Equality and the bill with amendments to the Law on the Anticorruption Center. If Parliament repeatedly adopts the given law, the head of state will no longer have the right of veto.
