The Broadcasting Code and other documents that regulate the activity of the broadcasters does not clearly specify the penalties that the Broadcasting Coordination Council can impose on the radio stations and TV channels that violate the electoral legislation, the Council's chairman Gheorghe Gorincioi said Friday, quoted by Info-Prim Neo. Gheorghe Gorincioi stated that it is the Central Election Commission (CEC) in Moldova that has the power to penalize the broadcasters that violate the electoral legislation rather than the Council. According him, in most of the countries of the world this is the right of the broadcasting regulators. In Friday's meeting, the members of the Council refused to examine the challenges filed by three election contenders that complained about violations committed by several TV channels. The applications were lodged with the CEC and remitted to the Council for examination. The Communists Party and the Party for Country and Nation demand punishing Prime TV for rerunning the program “VIP confidente” involving the Democrats' candidate No.2 Vlad Plahotniuc on November 27, when electoral propaganda was banned. The Liberal Democratic Party complained about the violation of the electoral legislation by the TV channel NIT, which broadcast live a press briefing held by the Communist leader on November 26. Council member Ludmila Vasilache said that if the Council refuses to penalize the broadcasters, they will continue to break the law in other elections as well. The Broadcasting Coordination Council sent back the challenges submitted by the three parties to the CEC.
