Latvian President could pay official visit to Moldova

The President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis is expected to make an official visit to the Republic of Moldova next year. The Latvian official accepted the invitation made by Prime Minister Pavel Filip to him in a meeting held on the sidelines of the 71st ordinary session of the UN General Assembly, IPN reports.

The two officials underlined the good cooperation relations established between Moldova and Latvia, in the context of the process of implementing the necessary reforms in Moldova. Raimonds Vējonis reiterated Latvia’s support for Moldova’s European course, saying the Latvian side is ready to share its experience in covering the European road.

The sides pleaded for intensifying the commercial-economic exchanges, underlining the necessity of stepping up the work of the Moldovan-Latvian intergovernmental commission for commercial-economic, industrial and technical-scientific cooperation and of signing a bilateral agreement on social security. So far Moldova and Latvia have signed 30 bilateral agreements, another five being under negotiation.

Another discussion of Pavel Filip, with the President of Estonia Toomas Hendrik Ilves, focused on the political dialogue, economic cooperation and the European agenda of Moldova. Toomas Hendrik Ilves reaffirmed Estonia’s support for the country’s European course, noting the Republic of Moldova continues to be among the priority countries in the Estonian cooperation assistance program.

With his Georgian counterpart Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Moldovan Premier conferred on the cooperation in the area of the European integration, stressing the necessity of continuing the exchange of experience, including within the Eastern Partnership.

Pavel Filip said Moldova is interested in learning from Georgia’s experience in doing reforms in the areas of internal affairs, justice, defense, public services and is for intensifying cooperation in these sectors. The sides agreed to constitute a joint group of experts who will ensure the transposon of Georgia’s experience in the justice sector.
