An exhibition of photographs showing how the national costume in Latvia developed in time was mounted in the Square of the Metropolitan Cathedral in Chisinau. There were exhibited 42 works of Latvian photographer Jurģis Rikveilis. The pictures present current and old Latvian national costumes, IPN reports.
His Excellence Uldis Mikuts, Latvia’s Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, said the history of development of the national costume and modern clothing worn on the territory of Latvia is a significant part of the cultural heritage of Europe. “After the Latvian Song and Dance Festival developed into a tradition, the inhabitants of Latvia started to become more interested in traditions, values, family roots and to want to learn more, including about the evolution of the national costume,” stated the ambassador.
Uldis Mikuts reiterated that the exhibition in Chisinau is dedicated to the summer solstice of June 23, whose celebration in Latvia is the most popular holiday. “On this night, we put on the national costume and go out in nature to meet the sun as, on this morning, the sun comes closest to Earth and the Latvians sing and dance so as to receive light and power from the sun. I think the exhibition will become a good occasion for further strengthening cooperation between the two capitals: Chisinau and Riga”, noted the official.
The event was organized by the Chisinau City Hall in concert with the Embassy of Latvia in Moldova and can be visited on the alley on A. Pushkin St during a month.
