The snow that fell last week is still bringing troubles to the Chisinau residents as it melts. Last Sunday, a Chisinau woman was just a few inches from being crushed by a huge mass of slush and ice that came down from a roof. The slush is falling from steep roofs in bunches, exposing to danger the soundness of spouts and the health and life of passers-by. According to the Department for Emergencies, fortunately, no one was hurt by falling consolidated snow and ice this winter; however pedestrians are advised to remain cautious when passing by multi-storeyed buildings in order to avoid loose icicles. Petru Gontea, deputy head of the city housing department, told Info-Prim Neo that the legislation lays the obligation to remove the icicles on home owners themselves. Still, there are few people who respect the law and even fewer who get fined by the police for that. Gontea says the managers of residential blocks and economic entities must ensure the removal of slush and icicles from roofs, and if it is impossible, to fence hazardous places and display warnings reading “Watch out for loose icicles!”. As our reporter learned from a metal slate roofing distributor, it is strongly recommended to fix retainers on roofs to break the consolidated snow, rendering it harmless to pedestrians. According to emergency doctors, an icicle falling from multi-storeyed buildings and gaining velocity may cause severe head injuries that can disable or even kill a person. That is why passers-by are advised to stay away from passages near multi-storeyed buildings.
