Last night’s rain caused damage in several settlements

The rain of the night of July 6 destroyed several roads and flooded cellars and wells in Criuleni district. In Opaci village, the people who left the inundated houses returned home, while in Straseni, the local authorities intend to deepen the bed of the Byk River so as to maximally diminish the risk of floods in the future.

Diana Turcan, press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, has told IPN that in Balabanesti, Criuleni, the rain covered in mud more than half of kilometer of a local road. In Izbiste village of the same district, 18 km of road were damaged, while six cellars and ten wells were flooded. In Cruglic, over 10 km of road were damaged and four cellars were flooded.

Diana Turcan also said that in Opaci, Causeni, where the levee of the local pond burst on Thursday, the damaged bridges started to be repaired. The water in wells is unsafe to drink and the people are supplied with drinking water in tanks. Ecaterina Lungu, nurse at the local Health Center, stated for IPN that the authorities plan to start cleaning and disinfecting the wells at the start of next week.

The head of Straseni district Petru Voloshchuk, where the Byk flooded the access road to six villages earlier this week, has told IPN that the water retreated, but the road is not passable as it must be cleaned. On July 8, Voloshchuk will go to the Ministry of the Environment to examine the possibility of deepening the bed of the Byk on a section of about 10 km.

Weather forecasters said there will be no rain until July 11. Temperatures will oscillate between 32 degrees Celsius during the day and 17 degrees Celsius at night. Rain with thunder and lightning is expected on July 11 and 12.
