Larisa Catrinici: Over 10,000 persons were diagnosed with cancer in Moldova in 2019

More than 10,000 new cases of cancer were recorded in Moldova in 2019, with the cases of colorectal, breast and cervical cancer being the most frequent ones, director of the Oncological Institute Larisa Catrinici was quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Fourth power” on N4 TV channel.

She noted that of the total number of new cases, 46% are in the first or second stage of disease and the persons can live for 10, 20, 30 years more if undergoing radical treatment. 54% of the cases are in the third or fourth stage and the treatment of disease in these cases depends a lot on the body’s capacity to react, but the forecasts are not at all optimistic.

According to Larisa Catrinici, all the cases of mouth cancer last year were discovered late. Also, of the about 200 cases of liver cancer, only four were detected in the first and second stages. “Judging by the morbidity by districts, by localities from the north to the south, there is limited access to hospitals, but it is evident where the health professionals are more vigilant to this disease. It is evident where more cases of cancer are discovered in the first and second stages. There are localities where the people regrettably come with end-stage cancer,” she stated.

She added that breast cancer is most spread among women and the cases of cancer related to blood are most often among children. In the case of lung cancer, the person can live for up to two more years. “If we detect 300 new cases of lung cancer, practically 250 die during the first year of the detection as the treatment no longer helps,” stated the director of the Oncological Institute.

In the case of breast cancer, the survival period is of 10-15 years, while in the case of prostate cancer, only 27% of the patients live for five more years.
