The large-scale works to dismantle the ropeway that connected the towns Rybnitsa and Rezina over the Nistru River have been completed. Press officer of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service Liliana Puscasu has told IPN that the technical works are yet to be performed, including by alpinists. They will be finished in October. The dismantling works are financially supported by the EU and UNDP Program “Support to Confidence Building Measures”, IPN reports.
A group of specialists of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia came to Moldova to assist the employees of the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service in the dismantling works. Experts from the Transnistrian region were also involved in this project.
The protection net that hang over the Nistru was destroyed by a controlled explosion. As a result, it was segmented into seven parts that fell into the water. The segments were later extracted by an MI-26T helicopter of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
The decision to take the ropeway away was taken in the round of Transnistrian conflict settlement talks in the 5+2 format of May 23, 2013. But the works were delayed owing to the shortage of funds.
The ropeway between Rybnitsa and Rezina was built with the aim of transporting raw material from the Rezina quarry to the Rybnitsa cement plant. It had been non-functional for over 20 years and risked collapsing over people’s houses.
