Large consignment of contraband cigarettes confiscated
A consignment of about 6 thousand packs of cigarettes intended for illegal export has been seized by Moldovan border guards, Info-Prim Neo reports.
According to the Border Guard Service, the smugglers, aged 32 and 62, natives of Braniste village, attempted to ferry the cigarettes to Romania across the Prut River, and were caught red-handed when they were transporting the packs from an Opel Kadett car to a boat.
The men failed to produce any documents for the consignment, and didn’t bear any papers for the car either. Searches of the car and boat turned up as many as 5625 packs of cigarettes estimated at more that MDL 9,000.
The entire consignment was seized, and the suspected smugglers are charged with illegal border crossing attempt and contraband attempt.
Another case at the same border was registered this morning. A Romanian citizen was arrested for illegal border crossing. At the time when he was arrested, the man didn’t bear any papers to confirm his identity. He told the border guards that he is 32 and is a native of Vaslui County.
Investigations to identify the man’s identity will be taken over by the Hancesti Police Office.
