Landslides likely in flood-hit areas

Landslides are possible in the flood-stricken areas after the floodwaters recede. In a news conference held at the Ministry of the Environment on Friday, the head of the Agency for Geology Alexandru Apostol said the landslides usually happen during the first month of the floods, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Landslides are likely on the Costesti-Stanca segment up to Nisporeni and Hancesti, and on the Sarata-Rezeni-Leova segment, up to Cantemir. The risk areas along the Nistru are Dubasari, Criuleni and Vadul lui Voda,” the expert said. The Ministry of the Environment suggests planting trees and bushes in the Prut meadow in order to stop erosion. The floodwater reached a part of the artesian wells. Twenty-four wells have been flooded in the Prut meadow alone. Some of the wells will be restored, while a part of them will be liquidated because they could pollute the groundwater. These include the wells in Grozesti (Nisporeni), Nicolaevca (Leova), and Sculeni (Ungheni). Five artesian wells have nee flooded along the Nistru. Four working groups composed of hydrologists were set up after the first floods caused by the Prut and Nistru water. They permanently monitor the artesian wells in the flooded areas, said Ion Panciuc, the head of the Moldovan Hydrogeological Expedition. “The water is less pouted than in 2008, but the pollution risk will increase when the floodwaters recede, following the decomposition of the corpses of animals and chemical waste,” said Gavril Galca, of the State Hydrometeorology Service. One flood wave came on the Prut in 2008. This year, Moldova was hit by seven flood waves on the river, five of which large.
