The land in Durlesti town is distributed according to political criteria, local councilor Stefan Sofronovici stated. “The apportionment of land is one of the processes most affected by corruption. However, the authorities do not have a serious attitude towards the phenomenon and do not offer examples when the persons that break the law are punished. The instruments used in the fight are inefficient and the effect is minimal,” Sofronovici said during “The Press to the Press” program broadcast by the local TV channel Colorit TV, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the local councilor, corruption is also felt in other areas of activity of the local public administration. “Those that fight against corruption are often biased and involved in corruption acts themselves. So, we have a vicious circle or a mined field. There are a few people that can say they are not corrupt. The law enforcers should provide examples how corruption is combated, while the jurists should explain the law and speak about the costs of corruption and the benefits of fighting this phenomenon,” Sofronovici said. During an interview broadcast during the same program, Mircea Esanu, the secretary of the Anticorruption Alliance, said that the state institutions do not manage to solve many cases of corruption so that it is impossible to assess the real costs of corruption. “The people are not afraid of offering and taking bribe. Therefore, this phenomenon is tolerated. The society starts to see an ordinary practice that can help solve their problems in this phenomenon,” Esanu said. “The Press to the Press” programs are produced at local TV channels in Moldova as part of a project supported by the Strengthening Civil Society Monitoring Capacity in Moldova Program carried out by the Academy for Educational Development with the technical assistance of the International Research and Exchanges Board.
