Klaus Iohannis seeks European support for Moldova in Brussels

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis asked for European support for Moldova at the European Council’s meeting in Brussels. “The Republic of Moldova is the most affected state by Russia’s aggression, after Ukraine, obviously,” the Romanian official said before the meeting, IPN reports.

Klaus Iohannis said he insists on the urgency of military support for Ukraine, but also on maintaining European support for Moldova. “Maintaining European support remains fundamental for Moldova as well. In our neighborhood, problems accumulate more in Moldova,” he stated.

According to the Romanian President, Moldova is going through a complex pre-election period and is facing hybrid threats, even unprecedented ones, and it is therefore essential to support it. “The safety of the Republic of Moldova means the safety of the European space,” said Klaus Iohannis.

The Romanian official also said that as far as the Union’s enlargement policy is concerned, he supports the adoption, as soon as possible, of the negotiation frameworks with Ukraine and Moldova, as well as the organization of the first political Intergovernmental Conferences with both states.

EU heads of state and government met for two days in Brussels to discuss military aid to Kyiv. The agenda of the summit also includes the negotiation framework for Ukraine’s and Moldova’s accession to the European Union.

The European Council’s meeting is taking place on March 21 and 22 in Brussels. Among the main topics discussed are the military support for Ukraine, the crisis in the Middle East, the situation of European farmers and the enlargement of the European Union.
