Klaus Iohannis: Romania is fully engaged in supporting Moldova’s European course

“Romania is fully engaged in supporting Moldova in its European integration course. Specifically, at institutional level, Romania will support all the efforts towards the consolidation and reformation of the state institutiones, of the entire state architecture of Moldova”, stated Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis.

During a press conference in Bucharest held alongside visiting Prime Minister Maia Sandu, Klaus Iohannis said Romania also stands ready to facilitate and improve the dialogue between the Moldovan government and Brussels. “I believe things will advance quite quickly and I’m positive that it will work out well eventually,” added Iohannis.

“We are aware that seeking European Union membership is a complicated process. We also recognize that, especially in recent years, the Moldovan government had declared itself pro-European, when in fact its actions went against European values and standards. Now we are at a stage where we need to regain the trust of the European institutions. The process is important for us, because we want European standards to be implemented in Moldova. We want the citizens of Moldova to have the same living standards as people in the European Union. And, above all, we want a responsible government, like those we see are in EU member countries,” said Moldova’s Prime Minister Maia Sandu.

She added that Moldova has a concrete roadmap in the form of the Association Agreement with the EU, which needs to be implemented, and when enough concrete progress can be demonstrated in implementing it, the way will be opened for further stages in the relationship with the EU.

When asked by reporters what guarantees are there that the “alliance with Igor Dodon’s pro-Russian party” will last, Sandu agreed that the political partnership between ACUM and PSRM is “not quite usual”, but “it was the only solution to get rid of a corrupt and anti-democratic regime.” “When we agreed to this political partnership, we put concrete actions, decisions and policies at its foundation with a view to freeing the state from captivity. And it is delivering,” stated Sandu. She also underlined that the Association Agreement with the EU is at the basis of the current Government’s agenda. “Obviously time will show how enduring this partnership will turn out to be, but so far both parties are respecting their promises.”
