Moldova’s union with Romania is a thing that only Bucharest can offer and that only Chisinau can accept. If Chisinau does not want to, nobody will force the Moldovans to unite with Romania, candidate for the Romanian presidency Klauss Iohannis said in an edition of the program “Politics” produced by the Moldovan channel TV 7 in Romania’s Sibiu, IPN reports.
Klauss Iohannis assured that if he wins the presidential elections, he will plead for maintaining and developing the Moldovan-Russian relations. “My person means a change for Romania and will mean a change for Moldova too. There is a relationship between Romania and Moldova deriving from our common history and common relations in the European Union. These relations must be continued, but not in any way. They must be improved,” stated the candidate for the presidency of Romania.
In this connection, Iohannes noted that the improvement of the Moldovan-Romanian relations does not mean only the provision of financial and material support, but, given that Romania is a member state of the EU, it must teach the Moldovan functionaries how the state institutions should function in a European state and the Moldovan politicians how to build the relationship with the EU.
The candidate also said that he is impatiently waiting for the results of the November 30 parliamentary elections in Moldova and voiced hope that the Moldovan voters will choose the Western development path. “As in Romania’s case, in Moldova there are many people who study, work or simply travel to Europe and when they return home they tell about the living standards there. I think there are no people who would not like to live in their own country as in the EU. This is a simple equation,” said the mayor of Sibiu.
Klaus Iohannis underlined that he is not bothered by the fact that Moldovan Premier Iurie Leanca made statements in support of his opponent Victor Ponta, but it seems strange to him when the heavyweight of a party that forms part of the Europeans People’s Party (EPP) campaigns in favor of the representative of a left-wing party at a time when there is an agreement between the EPP members to support their candidates reciprocally. He added he is not angry that Victor Ponta won a larger number of votes in Moldova, but is not satisfied with the fact that the Government of Romania didn’t establish a sufficient number of polling places abroad.
