The kindergartens and community centers will be outfitted with wheelchair access for children with locomotor disabilities within a project to review the standards applied to preschool education institutions, financed by UNICEF.
Contacted by IPN, UNICEF early development programs coordinator Larisa Vartosu said the current standards are outdated so that the wheelchair access in kindergartens for children with disabilities is limited. Under the old standards, the children with physical deficiencies are trained in specialized institutions.
“The proposed standards allow including the children with disabilities in kindergartens or general community centers. The institutions will have to be reequipped so that they have wheelchair access, sanitary facilities adjusted for children with locomotor disabilities and banisters,” said the specialist.
The revision of standards is performed within the Global Partnership for Education Project that is finance by UNICEF and the Ministry of Education.
