“The big tragedy of the Republic of Moldova is that the biggest illegalities during the last few years were committed under the screen of the European integration. The corrupt and irresponsible politicians of Moldova discredited the country’s European course,” ex-EU Special Representative for Moldovain 2007-2011 Kalman Mizsei stated in an interview for Radio Free Europe. He noted he is firmly convinced that despite these irregularities, the entry into the EU is Moldova’s only chance of prospering, IPN reports.
“My question derives from here: which is the political force and which are those politicians who will be able to represent the European road that can satisfy the people’s needs and can bring an upright and moral administration, continuation of economic reforms that enrich not only particular persons. This can also bring reforms by which the judges and prosecutors become independent and no longer serve the oligarchs or influential politicians in the state,” said Kalman Mizsei.
According to him, Maia Sandu is the most credible candidate in these elections. “As a minister of education, she showed credibility by her integrity and by her struggle against corruption, which has been Moldova’s greatest disease in the recent past,” stated the former EU Special Representative for Moldova.
Kalman Mizsei also said that these elections are a challenge for the whole society as the Moldovans must reform the state where politics, economy and society are directed by one political player. “We must look at these elections through the angle of the question: how can we recover the power that is concentrated in the hands of one person, in the hands of Mister Plahotniuc?” he stated.
He insists that the voting process must be democratic. The outcome of the presidential elections will show if the new President will be independent from Vladimir Plahotniuc and from the external powers, such as Russia, which has a neo-imperialist interest in the region.
