The Ministry of Justice has set up a task group "in order to identify the best proposals to reform the justice system", which should be included in a draft law, as part of the justice reform strategy. The Minister of Justice, Fadei Nagacevschi, provided details after the government meeting.
According to the minister, judges, lawyers, representatives of the academic environment, parliamentary groups and the ministry are are part of the task group. After today's meeting, a several day pause was taken in order to identify and collect suggestions. Additionally, the minister said that he "made a legal inventory" of the activity of the institution he runs and noted that a draft law on the reform of the Supreme Court of Justice and the evaluation of judges is not yet ready.
Fadei Nagacevschi also said that, after meeting with the body of judges that are part of the task group, he was surprised that they accept the extraordinary evaluation of the magistrates, however, this process should take place through existing institutions, which are to be be consolidated.
The minister added that he had a telephone call with the Venice Commission chairman and agreed to meet with him on Monday, November 25, in order to clarify the status of the justice reform bill. According to Fadei Nagacevschi, the Venice Commission chairman recommended to act according to the "hurry slowly" principle, as to not commit mistakes and to make the reform process an inclusive one, which complies with all democratic principles and international standards.
