Justice minister questioned on raider attacks

The Ministry of Justice imposes only sanctions on the judges and bailiffs involved in the cases of raider attacks on banks, but does not put forward mechanisms and recommendations for preventing such cases. Such a conclusion was reached by the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunities, which questioned Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim on September 21. On the other hand, the minister said that the institution he heads held accountable the ‘brains’ that were behind the raider attacks, Info-Prim Neo reports. The commission’s chairman Victor Popa said the legislation must be toughened up so as not to allow such kinds of attacks in the future and abuses on the part of judges. “We must improve the legislation without hurry. We will examine the situation within the commission and then submit proposals in Parliament. We requested the Ministry of Justice to formulate legislative proposals as well,” stated Victor Popa. Commission member Adrian Candu said the Ministry of Justice has not worked out mechanisms for combating raider attacks. “It is true that there must be penalties and penalized persons, but we should not limit ourselves to penalties. The subject must be addressed from a broader angle,” said the MP. According to Adrian Candu, the last year reform aimed at bailiffs was superficial and they should now return to it. “I hope we will work on the given reform in the context of the justice reform this autumn,” he said. Commission member Sergiu Sarbu said the reform of the court decision implementation system was a mistake. “This mistake cost us dear. There is complete chaos in the judicial system now,” said the Communist lawmaker. He shared the opinion of his Communist colleagues that the raider attacks represent settling of accounts between the leaders of the ruling alliance. Oleg Efrim stated that some members of the commission do not understand what duties the Ministry of Justice has. “There must be ultimately identified those to blame and attempt is made to find the Ministry of Justice guilty of the attacks. However, I think that any hearing on the issue that will be finalized and will produce conclusions for combating such attacks will have a positive effect,” said the minister. He also said that the Ministry will propose a set of amendments to the law on bailiffs so as to remove the identified drawbacks. The parliamentary commissions are holding hearings following the raider attacks that targeted four banks and the insurance company ASITO.
