Ministry of Justice Alexandru Tanase has been questioned by prosecutors as an injured party in the case concerning the tapping of phones in 2009. After the questioning, he told the reporters he was convinced that his telephone conversations had been listened to at the instructions of Communist leader Vladimir Voronin, who was head of state at that time, Info-Prim Neo reports. “As I was a member of an Opposition party and had a clear anti-Communist and anti-Government position, they decided to tap my phone so as to know more about our actions,” Alexandru Tanase said, stressing there existed no court decision allowing wiretapping. “I’m sure there must be suspects. An ordinance was made today whereby I was recognized to be an injured party. This case must be tried in court, while those who committed illegalities must be held accountable.” The minister also said the right to private life is a fundamental right. Nobody can tap other people’s phones, regardless of the political situation or posture, except when there is a relevant court decision. ”The right to political activity is guaranteed in the Constitution and I could have an anti-Voronin position as the Moldovan Constitution allows me to. The Communists also can have an anti-Government position,” Alexandru Tanase said. During January 4, 2009 – February 4, 2009 and February 12, 2009 – September 11, 2009, there had been tapped the phones of Alexandru Tanase, the Liberal-Democrat leader Vlad Filat, and the first deputy head of the PLDM Mihai Godea. The last two have not been yet recognized to be injured parties. Alexandru Tanase is sure that the calls of much more officials had been listened to in the period. Earlier, the head of the European Action Movement Veaceslav Untila sought explanations from the Prosecutor’s Office over the tapping of his phone. The leader of the Moldova Noastra Alliance Serafim Urecheanu also said that his telephone conversations had been listened to by order of the former administration.
