Minister of Justice Fadei Nagachevski doubts the legality of the court decision to free former Prime Minister Vlad Filat on parole. In a press briefing, the minister said he asked to be informed about the reasons for such a decision so as to see if these are sufficiently judicious and if the judgment was passed in accordance with the law, IPN reports.

Asked why he has such suspicions, Fadei Nagachevski said that in a compensatory trial earlier, the time in jail of Vlad Filat was reduced owing to the inhuman, insanitary and degrading conditions in which he was held and the National Administration of Penitentiaries opposed the reduction of the sentence then, but now reportedly requested to free the former Premier on parole.

The minister also said it is strange to him that he was not informed about the pending case. “This practice of hiding particular cases or at least of non-informing was kept after the change of government. Not even the minister of justice was informed,” he stated.

Under the decision of the Ciocana branch of the Chisinau City Court, Vlad Filat was freed on parole. He was to serve yet two years, eleven months and three days.

Vlad Filat is still banned from holding public posts for a period of five years and will remain without the Order of the Republic of which he was stripped. He was obliged not to change the domicile without the consent of the surveillance body. The ruling can be appealed to the Chisinau City Appeals Court within 15 days.
