None of the civil servants responsible for the demolition of buildings classed as architectural monuments has been held accountable so far, said lawyer Violeta Gasitoi. In a news conference on Wednesday, she stated that the judges are too tolerant towards the functionaries who break the law, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The buildings are destroyed, but the persons to blame are not punished. There is no precedent when the civil servants who flouted the law and allowed knocking down such buildings have been held responsible,” said Violeta Gasitoi. She also said that the phenomenon of corruption in the judicial system becomes evident when different decisions are passed on similar cases. Thus, the court is suspected of corruption or of not knowing the law, which is less probable. “Our hope is that the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime will objectively investigate the cases of demolition. There are prescription norms for holding those to blame accountable,” said the lawyer. In the same news conference, the director of the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration Ion Stefanita said that a judge of the Court of Appeals allowed demolishing a monument and erecting an apartment building instead of it, by the City Hall’s authorization, without consulting the people living nearby. “We informed the Prosecutor’s Office and requested the City Hall to explain why those illegal authorizations were issued. All these cases involve people who know the law, but do not obey it. They know very well how to avoid it. If the Supreme Court of Justice and the Prosecutor’s Office observe the law, we will win the case,” he stated. According to the Agency for Monument Inspection and Restoration, 82 buildings considered architectural monuments have been knocked down in Chisinau. The National Register of Monuments includes 977 buildings and monuments.
