Judge suspended from post

Judge Veaceslav Panfilii, of the Anenii Noi Court, who was earlier arrested by anticorruption prosecutors on charges of passive corruption, was suspended from post by the Supreme Council of Magistrates. The decision was taken in the April 28 meeting of the Council, IPN reports.

Earlier, the National Anticorruption Center said the judge asked for €1,000 for passing a favorable sentence in a civil case examined by him. Initially, the judge received €600. In the evening of April 7, he was caught in the act of taking the last tranche.

The judge was suspended from post at the request of the prosecutor general. He faces 7 to 15 years in jail and a fine of up to 200 000 lei and could be banned from holding public posts or carrying out particular activities for a period of 10 to 15 years.

This is the fifth case of corruption involving judges in the last one year and a half. Four judges from the districts Telenesti, Causeni, Criuleni sand Glodeni were earlier arrested on suspicion of corruption. Two of these were already convicted.
