Journalistic guild seeks Muruianu’s dismissal and more serious attitude from ruling alliance

A group of journalists Friday picketed the Palace of the Republic, where the Parliament of Moldova holds its sittings, demanding that Ion Muruianu be dismissed from the post of president of the Supreme Court of Justice as he labeled them ‘rabid dogs’. The journalists say that the Alliance for European Integration must take a more serious attitude if they don’t want to face greater problems in the future, Info-Prim Neo reports. Constantin Tanase, director of the publication “Timpul”, said the protest was a signal warning the political class that things do not develop as they should and the promised change is overdue. “We warn the ruling politicians that the press will keep an eye open for them and will permanently demand that they honor their obligations and keep their electoral promises,” Tanase said. He also said that the journalists are dissatisfied with the entire judicial system and consider that it should be significantly improved. “Muruianu’s dismissal will be only a stage in this process as things go wrong. The ruling coalition faces a great risk because, if they do not take measures, the voters in autumn will change their opinions if elections take place.” Writers Union chairman Valeriu Saharneanu said the political class should take attitude. “The authorities must implement fundamental reforms at a higher pace,” he said, stressing that the jurists must also get involved. He also said that Muruianu is to blame for the cases lost by Moldova at the ECHR. “Moldova cannot overcome the crisis as it must pay damages of millions. Muruianu is among the judges who showed non-professionalism or obedience,” Saharneanu said. Pantelei Sandulachi, the head of “Parlamentul-90” Association, said the legal system today is paralyzed and Muruianu’s deed is not an unordinary case or banal mistake as some politicians consider. “Muruinau is not alone. He is supported by a team that includes high-ranking officials,” Sandulachi said. Solicited by the protesters, Head of Parliament Mihai Ghimpu said Ion Muruianu broke the law and must be punished according to the law. “It is a serious violation, but we must carry out examinations in accordance with the law. I ask you to be patient,” Ghimpu said, adding that he lodged an application with the Supreme Council of Magistrates and waits for its verdict.
