Jose Manuel Barroso: Moldova urgently needs stability

The Republic of Moldova urgently needs stability so as to finish the reforms and define its future alongside Europe, former President of the European Commission Jose Manuel Barroso said in an interview for agerpres.ro, quoted by IPN. According to the official, Moldovan society is the one that should achieve a compromise, a common line between different political forces.

“I often visited Moldova. I know that the people in Moldova want to be closer to Europe, but for this to happen they need to show stability, avoid extremes and negotiate an accord with the IMF because, in financial terms, the situation is very serious and difficult. They need to fight corruption as this country was the victim of corruption and make those efforts that we can support from outside,” stated Jose Manuel Barosso.

“I know that Romania can offer important support owing to the very strong historical and cultural relations between Romania and Moldova. I want to thank Romania for everything it did for Moldova. Every time there is a discussion about Moldova, I remember that Romania is the first country that is trying to provide support. But we must be sincere – we cannot take the place of the Moldovans”.

Jose Manuel Barroso noted that Moldovan society is the one that should try and reach a compromise between different political forces. Europe is ready to support the democratic forces without picking one party or another so that these do reforms, fight corruption and offer the Republic of Moldova a European future.
