Joint statement by three states for rethinking Eastern Partnership

The Republic of Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia will together request the European Parliament to promote a resolution by which the three states would obtain clear political support and a roadmap for joining the European Union. The views and expectations of the Moldovan, Georgian and Ukrainian MPs concerning the future of the relations with the European Union are contained in a joint statement concerning the strategic rethinking of the Eastern Partnership, IPN reports.

The document was adopted by MPs of the three states at the end of a meeting on the future of the Eastern Partnership that was held in the Italian town Cadennabia during September 15-17. According to the Parliament’s press service, the discussions involved politicians from Germany and the U.S. The debates centered on the challenges and prospects of the Eastern Partnership in the context of the EaP Summit that will take place in Brussels this November.

Moldova’s Parliament was represented by Deputy Speaker Iurie Leanca and co-president of the Euronest Parliamentary Assembly Marian Lupu.

The adopted declaration reiterates the necessity of obtaining a European perspective in accordance with Article 49 of the Treaty on the European Union, which provides that any European state that meets the entry criteria may apply to become a member of the Union. “We agreed that the Parliaments of the Republic of Moldova, Georgia and Ukraine will develop a common agenda and plan of action for trilateral cooperation,” stated Iurie Leanca.

The statement was submitted to the European Parliament.
