Joint Moldovan-Romanian border controls to be launched in 2018

Joint Moldovan-Romanian controls at three border crossing points will be launched this year. The border crossing points are: Cahul-Oancea, Costesti-Stanca and Lipcani-Radauti. Customs Service director general Vitalie Vrabie told a news conference that the interstate agreement between Romania and Moldova on joint border controls was drafted and is to be endorsed by the Romanian side, IPN reports.

According to Vitalie Vrabie, the joint border controls will enable to optimize maintenance investments and to fluidize traffic.

The director general of the Customs Service said the works to modernize and extend the customs posts Leuseni, Sculeni and Giurgiulesti will begin in 2018. The project has a budget of €5 million, €3.2 million of which is the EU financing, while almost €1.8 million will be allocated from Moldova’s budget. The signing of the financing agreement with the EU was scheduled for this May.

Three border control areas will be built this year in Costesti, Sculeni and Giurgiulesti, by the model of those from Otaci. These are designed to facilitate traffic and export. There will also be erected three internal terminals at the customs posts Chisinau, Cahul and Balti and created an intelligence anti-fraud center and a center of excellence for the continuous training of customs inspectors.

Vitalie Vrabie also said that two scanners provided by the Government of China for the customs post Chisinau International Airport and the railway post Ocnita 1 are on the way to Moldova.
