Eight boys in Moldova are called Hristos (Christos or Christ), while 48 girls – Stalina. These are only some of the less traditional names that the parents had given to children in the last five years. According to the Civil Status Service, a boy from Moldova was named Ion (John) IV, IPN reports.
The parents choose for girls also names that represent their beauty. There are 31 girls called Diamanta, 13 girls called Gratiela, six girls called Draga, and two girls named Cristalina. Less traditional girls’ names are also Eselia, Helia, Luizina and Palerma.
Among the ‘astral’ names are Sun, Moon, Stela, Mars, Mercury and Galaktion.
The boys are also given names of philosophers, like Socrate and Platon, or of antic heroes. Twenty-one boys had been named Odysseus or Odyssey in the last five years. Rather unusual are also such names as Flor, Bondari, Israel or Rudic.
The parents who were inspired by serials chose such names as: Fernando, Isabella, Luis, Ludovic, Antonia, Rut and Rachel. There are also children called after famous artists such as Madonna, Jenifer, Kim and Karl.
Among other unusual names are Nurai, Batmir, Morc, Prints, Kain, Altina, Romela, Linfadora, Fantenia, Gratina, Gana, Octembrina.
